Pavlovsk Palace
Pavlovsk is the most comfortable of the imperial residences in the suburbs of St. Petersburg. It was built later than others: right up to the end of the 18th century, on the bank of the Slavyanka river, there were forest areas, where Catherine II loved to hunt. In 1777 she granted them to Pavel Petrovich as a summer cottage. Soon wooden mansions were erected with the names "Pauluste" (Paul’s Joy) and "Mariental" (Valley of Mary). In 1782-1786, architect Charles Cameron built a large palace with side colonnades and service buildings. In the short reign of Paul I, the palace was rebuilt and expanded.
